The Student Loans Company (SLC) offers loans and grants for studying in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
It is a non-profit making government-owned organisation set up in 1989 to provide loans and grants to students in universities and colleges across the UK.
This includes providing loans to help cover living costs, as well as loans for tuition fees.
SLC has 1.3 million student customers, and 2.8 million customers who are no longer in higher education, from whom it collects repayments.
In 2010/11, SLC paid out £5.5 billion in loans and grants to more than 1.3 million customers throughout the UK and £2.7 billion in tuition fees to colleges and universities.
In partnership with Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC), it collected £1.3 billion in repayments from customers mainly from the 2009/10 tax year.
